Native species! Nature's Raisin- cross between a banana and a prune! Low-maintenance, multi-stemmed shrub/small tree; grows to a height of approx. 20' in grown in more open areas but is also a shade tolerant understory species. It produces white flowers in May-June and the blue/black berry-like fruit in July-September. The leaves are a deep maroon/red color in the fall. The fruit is sweet and edible by many birds, wildlife, and humans. It is an adaptable species but prefers moist areas with rich loam to clay loam soil such as lowland woods, swamp boarders, and stream banks. Host to moths and a favorite amongst pollinators.
Great for the for CSP Program.
