DISTRICT FORESTER

POSITION SUMMARY
 
The Delta Conservation District (DCD) is seeking to hire a full-time Forester. This position serves a multi- county area in the central Upper Peninsula with the office located in Gladstone, MI.  The focus of this position is education and technical assistance to private forest landowners.  This position will also assist landowners in implementing a variety of forestland projects. The ideal candidate will have education and/or experience with timber sale administration and early successional management knowledge with a variety of game species.  This position is a permanent part of the DCD’s landowner natural resource and environmental assistance service program.    
 
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  • Provide on-site land examination and resource evaluation
  • Provide technical and financial assistance for natural resource management activities
  • Make referrals to the private sector (forest product producers and contractors)
  • Assist with the State of Michigan forest tax incentive program (QFP)
  • Provide information and technical assistance (forest & wildlife management, tree planting, TSI, Invasive species, etc.) 
  • Work closely with local Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) staff to understand and help implement processes available to landowners through Farm Bill programs
  • Collaborate and support DCD programs and activities to promote programs, events, and meetings as necessary to reinforce the importance of sustainable natural resource management
  • Pursues/maintains certification with Society of American Foresters (SAF)
 
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s Degree in forestry from an accredited university is required
  • Three or more years of experience with timber sale administration and early successional management knowledge with game species, is preferred
  • Proficient in using GIS and ArcMap
  • Experience collaborating, developing, and delivering forestland education programs to a variety of audiences in diverse settings would be preferred.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license and pass a Background Security Check.
 
COMPENSATION
 Starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience and range from $47,000 to $52,000.  This is an exempt employee salary position. Regular work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday thru Friday. This position consists of field work and office work, with the possibility of special assignments.  Benefits include 16 paid holidays, starting vacation and sick hours of 104 each per year.  Healthcare benefit can be negotiated.
